Simpson Esports Wins Midwest Esports Conference Award

The Simpson Esports team recently closed out their Midwest Esports Conference (MEC) season with a LAN tournament at Purdue Northwest featuring nationally ranked collegiate teams. Though Simpson didn’t bring home their desired scores, they were sure not to leave empty-handed.

The esports program won the inaugural Unified Award, the highest award and recognition given by the MEC. The Unified Award is given to those who lead the esports community in professionalism, mentorship, creativity, and a willingness to drive collegiate esports forward. Not only was Simpson the first team to receive this award, but they earned it in their first year as an MEC member. “This award directly reflects both Hubert’s leadership and the team’s ethos of sportsmanship in their competition,” said Heidi Levine, Vice President for Student Development and Planning.

In only his third year as the esports director, Whan Tong is very happy with the progression of the program and their recent award. “The team was nominated alongside programs with directors from professional organizations who have been in the esports industry for five-plus years. In only our third year, our coaching staff was a top three nominee for coach of the year, and we won the Unified Award,” said Whan Tong.

The Esports team will continue their National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) run this Wednesday, November 15, in the first round of the playoffs.
