Simpson Professor Selected as Mentor for National Research Program

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Marilyn Vazquez Landrove was recently selected to serve as a mentor in the SIAM-Simons Undergraduate Summer Research Program, a program targeted toward U.S. students from groups underrepresented in applied and computational mathematics. Dr. Vazquez Landrove is one of only five mentors from across the country to be chosen for the program.

Next summer, two SIAM program students will work with Dr. Vazquez Landrove to learn how to conduct scientific research, effectively communicate mathematics and computational science principles, and better understand how they can pursue a career in applied mathematics and computational science.

“This is evidence of Marilyn’s leadership in the mathematical community and her commitment to broadening participation in undergraduate research for those who are traditionally underrepresented in applied and computational mathematics,” said Heidi Berger, professor and chair of mathematics at Simpson. “It also speaks to Simpson’s role in being a preeminent location for conducting meaningful research with students.”

At the conclusion of the program, students and mentors from the five sites will come together via video conference to present their work, participate in professional development activities, and engage in community-building initiatives.
