Simpson Takes Third at Speech and Debate Nationals

Simpson College captured third place in Overall Sweepstakes at the 45-team Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament hosted by Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, last weekend. Simpson claimed second place in Debate Sweepstakes.

Simpson’s strong showing featured a pair of individual national runner-up honors: Garrett Bond in Novice IPDA Debate and Sydni Powell in Congressional Debate. Bond was also a national runner-up in To Honor, a specialty event at PKD this year that focused on how the legacy of organized college forensic activity can be improved in the future.

“I am incredibly proud of the students’ hard work and practice because they each played a crucial role in our success,” said Tiana Brownen, Speech & Debate program director. “What really sets this team apart is unwavering commitment to both Simpson’s success and being supportive members to the larger forensics’ community.”

Assistant Director Marisa Mayo also praised the total team effort: “We are so proud of this team and the leadership of our seniors that helped propel our team to reach such incredible heights.”
