Speech and debate team wins big again

Simpson tops field of 21, wins overall team sweepstakes at Derryberry Season Opener tournament

The Simpson College speech and debate team won the virtual Southwest Baptist University Derryberry Season Opener tournament Oct. 2-3, besting a field of 21 colleges and universities from across the country. Simpson was also named the top Pi Kappa Delta chapter at the tournament.

Simpson won the overall speech and debate sweepstakes with 200 team points, ahead of the University of Central Missouri and Webster University. The win marks the second in a row for the program, which won the debate competition at last week’s Queen’s College Big Apple Tournament.

“This is the best season start for our speech and debate program,” said Spencer Waugh, director of the speech, debate and mock trial. “It is through the combined efforts of a very talented first-year class and a seasoned varsity squad that they have achieved these results. We are excited about the rest of the season.”

Mo Marks led Simpson with six individual awards, including champion and top novice of extemporaneous speaking. Marks also finished as top novice of impromptu speaking and communication analysis. Trenity Rosenberg, Andrew Flory, Scout Peery and Scott Krueger closed out the semifinal bracket of junior varsity Lincoln–Douglas to win the division. Flory earned top speaker honors in junior varsity Lincoln–Douglas.

Following three straight competitions, Simpson will enjoy a weekend off. The team returns to action Oct. 16-17 at the Mule  Invitational hosted by the University of Central Missouri.
