Speech & Debate Wins Tulsa Tourney

Simpson College Speech and Debate in Tulsa

Simpson’s Speech and Debate team captured first place at the Tulsa Community College Tournament held Oct. 25-27.  Simpson totaled 355 points to hold off second-place Texas Christian University (TCU) (319 points) for the Overall Sweepstakes crown. Simpson took second place in the Debate Sweepstakes. In all, 17 teams competed in the tourney.

Outstanding debate performances included: Wesley McDowell, champion in Novice IPDA Debate Speaker and co-champion in Novice IPDA Debate; and Aidan Jones, co-champion in Novice IPDA Debate.

In speech, tourney honors included: Wesley McDowell, champion in After Dinner Speaking and champion in Impromptu Speaking; Anja Waugh, tournament champion in Pentathlon; and Ryan Magalhaes, tournament champion in Extemporaneous Speaking and tournament champion in Persuasive Speaking.

Simpson also took first place overall in the separate one-day tournament — the Border Wars Swing — held Sunday, Oct. 27. Simpson finished 66 points ahead of second place TCU.

Three Simpson competitors came away with multiple individual tournament championships: Andrew Samountry in Poetry Interpretation and Program of Oral Interpretation; Ryan Magalhaes in Impromptu Speaking and Pentathlon; and Wesley McDowell in Extemporaneous Speaking and After Dinner Speaking.
