Speech team places second at Amherst College’s Jack Lynch Invitational

Simpson takes runner-up honors out of 19 colleges and universities

A small group of Simpson College speech team members earned second place in Amherst University’s virtual Jack Lynch Invitational held Nov. 7.

Mo Marks finished as the tournament’s top overall champion, winning the extemporaneous speaking, persuasive speaking and impromptu speaking categories. Simpson also received a championship performance from Elise Sturgeon in the after-dinner speaking category.

“This is a terrific accomplishment for such a small group of students,” said Deano Pape, assistant director of speech and debate. “Eighty percent of our speech entries were recognized as finalists. Simpson College continues to excel during an incredibly challenging time for virtual competitions.”

Marks finished second in informative speaking while Sturgeon came in second in prose interpretation. Kylie Doupnik added a second-place effort in persuasive speaking and placed third in dramatic interpretation.

The team will compete next Nov. 13-15 in the Simpson Storm Invitational.
