Summer Well Spent: Behind the Lens

Frank Novak ’27 is bringing his future into focus through hands-on experience. The multimedia journalism major and interactive media minor spent the summer as head photographer for the Loras All Sports Camp, capturing the energy and emotion of more than 600 campers each week.

“I chose this internship because I was excited for the opportunity to expand my photography portfolio in a new environment and find new ways to capture emotion during different activities,” Novak said.

As head photographer, Novak’s work extended far beyond the sidelines. Novak scheduled his photography team, planned shoots and prepared images for publication, gaining experience in both visual storytelling and behind-the-scenes production.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned from this internship is how important it is to stay organized with your files and your schedule,” he said. “When dealing with thousands of photo files and over 600 campers a week, I have to stay organized to properly photograph all aspects of camp.”

Novak said his classes at Simpson equipped him with tools to approach photography creatively, helping him build a solid foundation for a career in sports photography.

“I found that my time at Simpson prepared me for this internship by teaching me to find new ways to photograph and document my environment creatively,” he said. “Instead of simply pointing my camera and taking a photo, I am intentionally finding new angles and new faces for a variety of pictures and emotions.”
