Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium Set for April 20
More than 100 students will be featured presenters in the 2023 Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium to be held Thursday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on the Simpson College campus. Students will share their research and creative works in a wide variety of disciplines through oral presentations, performances and poster sessions.
“The Symposium is a showcase of the incredible research Simpson students have done on interesting and important projects,” says Dr. Katherine Vance, associate professor of mathematics and co-director of undergraduate research. “It’s a testament to the supportive and encouraging environment that Simpson faculty have created to nurture students’ curiosity and creativity. I’m so proud of what our students have achieved,” she continued.
The event will also include keynote address by Dr. Chris Jones, a research engineer with IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering at the University of Iowa. Dr. Jones’s interdisciplinary research focuses on the degradation of the state’s water resources due to past and current agricultural practices.
At 11:30 a.m. in the Kent Campus Center Black Box Theatre, Dr. Jones will present “This Land is Their Land: Iowa Agriculture and the Struggle for Clean Water.” The presentation will focus on the evolution of Iowa’s farming systems since European settlement and the consequences for water and the rest of the environment. Dr. Jones will also address the role of science within the context of Iowa’s water politics and the environmental justice issues created by the impairment of the public’s water.
