World Food Prize Laureate to Speak at Simpson
Dr. Philip E. Nelson, 2007 World Food Prize Laureate and Professor Emeritus at Purdue University, will discuss “A Career with Unexpected World Impact” at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2023, at Simpson College. Presented by the John C. Culver Public Policy Center and the World Food Prize Foundation, Nelson’s lecture will be held in Simpson’s Black Box Theatre, Kent Campus Center.
During his 50-year career at Purdue University, Dr. Nelson developed a number of aseptic food processing and packaging methods that allowed the safe storage of large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables. His research and achievements in aseptic processing technology have benefited developing countries by providing an inexpensive packaging and shipping system for importing and exporting perishables.
In 1995, Nelson received the prestigious Nicholas Appert Award from the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), where he went on to serve as president for a year in 2001. His numerous other awards and honors include the Food Processing Putman Food Award; the National Award for Agricultural Excellence; the USDA Secretary’s Award for Personal and Professional Excellence; and the H.D. Brown Food Processing Person of the Year Award.
Nelson has served appointments to the U.S. government, including the USDA National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education and Economic Advisory Board; the USDA Specialty Crops Committee; and the USDA Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Dr. Nelson’s presentation is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
