Speech and debate team collects four wins to close October

Body

The Simpson College speech and debate team hit midseason form with multiple wins at the University of Central Missouri and Bethany Lutheran College to close the month of October.

Simpson won the speech, debate and overall team points competition at Central Missouri’s virtual tournament held Oct. 16-17. The team then competed in-person at Bethany Lutheran on Oct. 30-31, traveling to Mankato, Minnesota to capture the top spot in overall team points.

In four competitions this fall, Simpson has won eight tournament titles: three overall team sweepstakes championships, three speech championships and two debate championships. Director of speech, debate and mock trial Spencer Waugh’s team has won at least one championship at each competition in 2021.

Simpson finished first out of 22 schools and was recognized as the Top Pi Kappa Delta School at Central Missouri. The Storm beat Marian University in both overall team points (252.5-140) and speech points (113-109) and beat Washburn University in debate points (139.5-67).

The Storm overwhelmed the competition at Bethany Lutheran, finishing 284 points ahead of second-place Minnesota State University. Simpson finished with 379 team points to lead the field of 11 colleges and universities.
