Sociology examines the “interface” between individuals and society.

Each gets much of its character from the other, so solving problems at either level requires understanding how the two levels relate. For instance, socialization transforms us from individuals to social creatures who fill the roles that society demands of us by adopting “appropriate” beliefs and behaviors.

Society in the 21st century is changing rapidly and so are the challenges. A degree in sociology provides you with a unique foundation to better understand and impact an ever more diverse and globalized world.

You will learn how position yourself to apply social theory to real-life situations, analyze and interpret social science data and formulate ethical responses to challenging situations – relevant skills to many diverse careers.

As a society seeking to solve social problems like sexism, global warming, or social media bullying, we must understand how social systems affect individual behavior. Progress on individual or social problems demands that we address thorny ethical dilemmas.

The study of sociology goes beyond the basics of human behavior. With that as a foundation, you will become immersed in social and moral issues of the day to bring life to theory.
