Randy Evans to deliver Constitution Day Lecture

Executive director of the Iowa Freedom of Information Council will discuss government transparency

Simpson College (simpson.edu) announced today that Randy Evans, executive director of the Iowa Freedom of Information Council, will serve as the speaker for the annual Constitution Day Lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020.

The virtual event begins at 1 p.m. and will take place via the Zoom video-conferencing application. The event is free and open to the public. Visit simpson.zoom.us to register.

Evans will engage in a conversation on transparency and democratic government with Brian Steffen, professor and chair of the department of multimedia communication. A retired journalist, Evans was a longtime writer and editor for the Des Moines Register. His work with the IFOIC focuses on promoting government accountability on issues of openness and transparency.

Earlier this month, the IFOIC reached a settlement in a lawsuit against the Polk County sheriff’s department over dash-camera video and other records in the fatal shooting of a motorist in 2018. The agreement calls for increased transparency by the department in cases that result in death or serious injury.

Government transparency during times of a global pandemic and racial unrest will be the focus of the Constitution Day discussion, which is co-sponsored by the John C. Culver Public Policy Center at Simpson College.
