Simpson Speech & Debate Wins Derryberry Season Opener

Simpson’s defending national champion speech & debate team captured first place in the overall sweepstakes at the Derryberry Season Opener at Southwest Baptist University last weekend. Simpson dominated the 18-team field with 122 points, besting second-place University of Central Missouri by 41 points.

In addition to claiming the overall crown, Simpson was the top PKD chapter and took first in the individual event sweepstakes, while earning second place in the debate sweepstakes.

Ryan Corcoran and Anja Waugh led the way for Simpson, which produced many outstanding individual performances. Waugh was the tournament champion in quadrathon, while Corcoran walked away with tournament champion honors in extemporaneous speaking, prose interpretation, duo interpretation — with teammate Andrew Samountry — and the Bright Young Scholar Award.
