Speech and Debate Wins Biggest Tourney of Regular Season

Simpson’s Speech and Debate team captured first place at the Gorlok Gala hosted by Webster University, St. Louis, last weekend. Simpson earned a clean sweep in overall sweepstakes, debate sweepstakes and individual event sweepstakes, as well as bringing home top PKD Chapter honors. This is Simpson’s second consecutive year winning the 25-team event — the largest tournament it competes in outside of nationals.

Once again, multiple team members claimed individual championships to help lead Simpson’s outstanding overall performance. Top showings featured the following:

Debate Champions

Wesley McDowell and Leah Salzar: Novice IPDA Debate
Wesley McDowell: IPDA Debate Speaker Award
Ryan Corcoran: Open IPDA Debate Speaker Award

Speech Champions

Anja Waugh: Extemporaneous Commentary
Ryan Magalhaes: Champion in Editorial Impromptu
Andrew Samountry (2 titles): Program of Oral Interpretation, Podcasting
Kennedy Moore: Informative Speaking

In March, Simpson will seek its eighth combined national championship in the last nine years.
