Workshops in Music Education

The Simpson College Music Department provides unique experiences for Simpson College music students with the presentation of one Music Education Workshop every semester, each led by successful music educators from across the country.

Teachers and graduate students from the community are also invited to attend, and should register using the link listed below.

These Workshops are interactive opportunities to learn about different methods, philosophies, and ideas of teaching in the field of music, and helps equip our students with many different ideas and skills to become fantastic and versatile music educators.

The Simpson College Music Education Workshop Series has been substantially funded through the generous gift of Stephen Horvath ‘03, in honor of Michael Patterson and in memory of Maria DiPalma, Former chair of Music at Simpson.  The workshops are also sponsored by the Kodaly Educators of Iowa.

Music of My Hawaii: Songs, Ukulele, and Cultural Context | SEPT. 21, 2024 Jana Martin, Presenter

Being the third generation born and raised on the island of Kauai, my musical upbringing includes a mix of my Japanese heritage and Hawaiian culture. This workshop will explore the varied styles of Hawaiian musical traditions including cultural context, and will explore ways to respectfully include activities from cultures that are not your own. Material for all ages will be presented, along with pedagogical connections, ukulele arrangements, dances, and literature. Repertoire will include Hawaiian music, as well as music representative of other prominent cultures in Hawaii and Hawaiian-style covers of popular music. Participants are welcome to bring an ukulele or guitar to play along!

Musicianship and Movement: Eurhythmics for the Music Classroom | JAN. 25, 2025 Crystal Henricks, Presenter

With limited class time, teachers can easily diminish the value of purposeful and artistic movement.  However, through eurhythmics, students more readily retain information, internalize musical concepts, and demonstrate musical expression.  The key to joyful movement in the classroom is to do it often and with a structured plan.   The students will quickly become comfortable moving through space, listening with a musical ear, and representing the music with their bodies.  Participants in this session will experience physical activities for all grades to enhance their sequence of musical skills as well as increase artistry in the classroom.  Come ready to see all the opportunities that carefully planned and thoughtful movement can bring to your classroom.

Crystal Henricks currently teaches lower school music at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools.  Her experience includes Nursery School-12th grade general and choral music, both in Chicago and China.  She holds a BS in Music Education from Asbury College, Kodály Certification and MMEd from Capital University, and is a Master Teaching Artist with the American Eurhythmics Society.  She completed Levels I-III Orff Schulwerk Certification from the University of Kentucky and Anderson University.  She is an active clinician for workshops throughout the United States.  She has taught Kodály pedagogy and folk song research classes at Colorado State University, DePaul University, and the University of Central Missouri.
