Writing Across the Curriculum

A campus hub for academic discourse and writing development

We’ll help you build dynamite professional writing skills

Research shows that writing about subjects improves learning outcomes in those content areas. Simpson’s Writing Across the Curriculum is grounded in this knowledge and provides various resources and programs to improve, support and provide instruction on student writing well beyond first year experiences.

In class

SWAC’s Written Communication courses are threaded throughout the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum you complete at Simpson—regardless of your major discipline.

Your first WC-designated course is the first-year Simpson Colloquium. In the colloquium, you’ll be assigned a Simpson Writing Fellow. These trained students are dedicated to peer writing success and are an excellent additional resource for questions.

This innovative addition to our curriculum elevates writing proficiency to a level that can impress in any work setting and sustain throughout any academic career. Ours is a campus culture that supports writing, and a community dedicated to teaching and learning exemplary communication techniques.

And in person

The Simpson Writing Center is located in the back of Dunn Library on the first floor (beside the SWAC office, room 105). Our team of professionals and trained peers will help you work on writing assignments and skill development in a positive learning environment.

College professors require types of writing that may be new to you. Being asked to write an in-depth research paper, a lab report or even a journal entry can seem confusing if you don’t understand what these different types of writing entail.

In an individual session, you'll practice crafting what constitutes as strong writing at the college level. Expect feedback on your writing, tips for improvement, proofing suggestions and guidance on completing an assignment with excellence. A consultation can provide feedback at any stage of the writing process, for writers of every skill level.
