Project Descriptions 2023

Is Access Improved?  Geospatial Analyses of Virtual and In-Person Down Syndrome Specialty Programs - Dr. Heidi Berger

This project focuses on analyzing access to health care for individuals with Down syndrome. Currently, there are 71 Down syndrome specialty clinics across the country in 34 different states. It is estimated that 4-5% of eligible patients are enrolled in specialty clinics. In 2020, Massachusetts General Hospital launched DSC2U, a virtual Down syndrome specialty clinic. We want to better understand if this new virtual model will improve access to care for families of loved ones with Down syndrome.

This work builds upon other Bryan Program projects. In Summer 2016, research students approached this question nationwide, identifying large-scale regions of inaccessibility and proposing new clinic locations. We seek to improve upon these findings by incorporating data on those who have enrolled in DSC2U.

This work will be done in conjunction with Dr. Brian Skotko, the director of the Down Syndrome Program at Massachusetts General Hospital and the director of DSC2U.

Analyzing Open Data from Studies about Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging - Dr. Sal Meyers

To improve the transparency of psychological science, many researchers make the data from their studies publicly available. Focusing on studies related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (e.g., studies about women, first-generation college students, and students of color in STEM fields), we will identify data sets and use them to test the original research hypotheses and new hypotheses that we generate.  We'll use jamovi (an open-source statistical package) to conduct independent samples t tests, paired samples t tests, correlations, 2×2 chi-square tests of independence, one-way ANOVAs, one-way repeated measures ANOVAs, two-way ANOVAs, and multiple regressions. We'll also use the new statistics to determine effect sizes and confidence intervals. Students do not need to be familiar with any of these statistics or with jamovi to work on this project.
