Following an extensive national search process, Simpson College has named Matt Hansen to serve in the newly integrated position of vice president for Student Development and dean of students. Prior to joining Simpson’s administration, Hansen provided 20 years of service to St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, where he held several leadership roles including interim dean. Hansen’s resume also includes stints at the University of Maine and the University of Wisconsin- Superior. He earned his bachelor’s degree in speech communication from Macalester College and holds a master’s of higher education administration and student development from the University of Maine.

“Matt has already gained the trust of students, peers and colleagues campuswide as a respected member of the Simpson community,” said President Jay Byers. “Beyond the great depth of experience and expertise he has acquired, Matt brings great enthusiasm and passion to the work of serving the needs of all Simpson students. He is the consummate team player and a tremendous asset for the College.”

During his time at Simpson, Hansen has provided leadership for Residence Life, Campus Security and Student Activities. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity and multiculturalism as an active member of the All-Campus Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (ACDEI) team, including as chair of the Bias Response subcommittee. He also helped secure grants from FEMA and the Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) totaling more than $650,000. His many other collaborative endeavors include his responsibility for leading the College’s emergency and crisis response while serving as cochair of the Emergency Response Planning Committee.

“I am thrilled to continue my journey at Simpson with this growing opportunity to provide collaborative leadership in transforming student lives,” said Hansen. “My passion is meeting students where they are and helping them achieve their full potential. I have already had the privilege of working with some outstanding people at Simpson. I look forward to continuing those partnerships, as we create increasingly exceptional student experiences.”
