Dr. Heidi Berger

Dr.Heidi Berger

My name is Heidi Berger and I'm an Associate Professor of Mathematics and the PI (Principle Investigator) for the Carver Bridge to STEM Success Program. I grew up in Cedar Rapids, IA, earned a bachelor of arts in mathematics and physics from Coe College, and a master of science and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. When I am not at Simpson, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking, reading, and traveling.

I am an Associate Professor of Biology & Environmental Science and currently serve as a Co-Director of Undergraduate Research. I have been at Simpson since 2008, where I teach a range of courses that focus on introductory biology, plants, invertebrates, and freshwater ecology. My research interests include measuring impacts of habitat disturbance on plant and invertebrate communities, as well as factors important to recovery of those habitats through restoration. I have been involved in a series of interdisciplinary research projects as well, with fellow Simpson colleagues Dr. Heidi Berger (Mathematics) and Dr. John Pauley (Philosophy). In the Carver Bridge program, I will serve as a resource for students interested in a degree and career in Biology or Environmental Science.

I am committed to helping students develop a sense of purpose and become competitive candidates for their first-choice destinations following graduation. I believe a well-rounded Simpson College experience incorporates career education, service opportunities, and professional experiences. As the Director of Career Development and Civic Engagement, I enjoy connecting students with our community partners and helping them grow as professionals. In relation to the Carver Bridge Program, I support the collaborative efforts of Simpson College faculty and the area employers who have volunteered to be mentors to students in the program. I also support students in the program as they apply for and engage in career related experiences like job shadowing, summer research, and internships.
