Design Positions

At Theatre Simpson, students have the opportunity to design or assist in the design of a production.

Applications for design positions are accepted during the spring for the following academic year.   See below for area-specific requirements and expectations.
 

Theatre Simpson General Production Leadership Expectations: A general list of the expectations placed on all students in Design/Tech leadership positions for Theatre Simpson Productions.

Production team members will write a Statement of Intent expressing their interpretation of the action of the play. This statement, done relatively early in the process, is a way to contribute to the overall conversation about the plans for the production.

The following are Design positions available to students:

Student Director: During the Festival of Short Plays, acts as the director of one or more short plays, in conjunction with the Senior Seminar course.

Assistant Director: The Assistant Director provides assistance to the Director of a production.  The specific duties are negotiated with the director and are dependent on the needs of the production and the specific skills of the assistant director.

Lighting Designer Designs the lighting for a production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so.

Assistant Lighting Designer Assists in designing the lighting for a production, and usually focuses on one particular aspect of the design.

Sound Designer Designs the sound for a production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so, and works closely with the Sound Engineer.

Assistant Sound Designer Assists the Director in designing the sound for a production, mainly by finding cues and working with the Sound Engineer.

Props Designer/Master  Designs the properties for a production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so.

Scenic Designer Designs the scenery for a production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so.

Assistant Scenic Designer Assists in designing the scenery for a production, and usually focuses on one particular aspect of the design.

Student Technical DirectorOversees the execution of the technical designs by keeping track of budgets and deadlines and prioritizing what tasks need to be completed. Assists in making technical drawings of items to be built for the production, including the set, and in delegating tasks to crew and work-study members.

Costume Designer Designs the costumes for a production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so.

Assistant Costume Designer Assists in designing the costumes for a production, and usually focuses on one particular aspect of the design.

Hair and Make-up Designer Designs the hair and make-up for a production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so.

Dramaturgy Produces a significant research project in conjunction with the production and provides all necessary documentation for doing so.  The project could entail doing historical or biographical research, creating a study guide for High School Theatre Festival, or other materials as seen fit by the director.
