Abbreviations and Acronyms

  • ACBC – The All College Budget Committee consists of faculty, staff, and students. They are responsible for advising the college president on budget issues. The primary concern of this committee is figuring out how to maintain a balanced budget. In contrast, the primary concern of the Budget Liaison Committee (BLC) is to represent the faculty’s interests as budget decisions are made.
  • ACUC – Animal Care and Use Committee
  • APIC – Academic Program Improvement Committee – evaluates departments, programs, and general education designations. Each department and program submits a self-evaluation once every 5-8 years
  • APRC – Assessment and Program Review Committee: This committee no longer exists; it was divided into two committees: APIC and SLIC
  • AR – The Arts – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • ARMC – Amy Robertson Music Center
  • ASFAC – Admissions, Scholarships and Financial Assistance Committee
  • BLC – Budget and Liaison Committee Six members by rank (two full professors, two associate professors and two assistant professors or instructors).
  • BPAC – Blank Performing Arts Center – the building housing the theatre department and Pote Theatre
  • C&G – Continuing and Graduate Program offers courses in the evenings and online. We aren’t supposed to use an acronym for the Continuing and Graduate program at all, but people frequently say C&G or CGP anyway.
  • CA – Community Advisor – a student employed by Student Development to work in one of the residence halls or campus apartments to serve as a resource to students regarding roommate issues, conflict resolution, accessing campus resources, etc.
  • CAB – Campus Activities Board – student run organization that arranges for comedians, musicians, and other entertainers to perform on campus
  • CE – Civic Engagement – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • CHIP – Capitol Hill Internship Program
  • CL – Collaborative Leadership – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • CNC – Constitution and Nominating Committee – nominates candidates for election to faculty committees and reviews proposed changes to the constitution or by-laws
  • CT – Critical Thinking – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • CVIL – Center for Vocation and Integrative Learning – this office has been renamed Career Development and Civic Engagement
  • DP – Diversity and Power in the United Stated – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • ECC – Engaged Citizenship Curriculum – the general education curriculum
  • EPCC – Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee – all proposed changes to majors, minors, ECC designations, and courses go through EPCC
  • ES – Embedded Skill – part of the general education curriculum. There are 7 embedded skills: Collaborative Leadership (CL), Critical Thinking (CT), Information Literacy (IL), Intercultural Communication (IC), Oral Communication (OC), Quantitative Reasoning (QR), and Written Communication (WC).
  • EV – Ethics and Value Inquiry – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • EWG – Evening, Weekend, and Graduate program; this abbreviation should no longer be used as the program is now called the Continuing and Graduate Program
  • FDC – Faculty Development Committee – this committee makes recommendations about most of the grants funded by the faculty development office. It also provides guidance to the director of faculty development.
  • FPC – Faculty Personnel Committee – this committee makes recommendations regarding promotion, tenure, and sabbaticals
  • GP – Global Perspectives – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • HP – Historical Perspectives in Western Culture – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • IC – Intercultural Communication – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • IL – Information Literacy – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • IRB – Institutional Review Board. All research conducted with human participants needs to be approved by this ethical review board before data collection begins.
  • LAC – Library Advisory Committee acts in an advisory capacity in all areas of library administration
  • MACJ – Masters of Arts in Criminal Justice offered through the Continuing and Graduate Program
  • MAT – Master of Arts in Teaching offered through the Continuing and Graduate Program
  • MMIC – Multicultural/Minority Issues Committee addresses issues of diversity and inclusivity
  • MSA – Multicultural Student Alliance – a student group dedicated to spreading diversity
  • OC – Oral Communication – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • PBCC – Post-Baccalaureate Curriculum Committee reviews all proposed changes to post-baccalaureate certificates and graduate programs
  • QR – Quantitative Reasoning – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • RLC – Religious Life Community – a student lead group that organizes a wide variety of spiritual events and service opportunities
  • RSC – Research, Scholarship, and Creativity Grant for faculty through the Academic Dean and Faculty Development office
  • SAC – Simpson Athletic Club – athletic facility memberships by the general public
  • SAC – Study Abroad Committee provides oversight of study abroad proposals
  • SARA – Sexual Assault Response Advocates – provides 24/7 advocacy services to anyone in need of support and/or assistance due to sexual assault.
  • SC – Simpson Colloquium – a course required of all entering students; for most students this is a first-year experience course, but there is also a version of the course for transfer students
  • SGA – Student Government Association
  • SLIC – Student Learning Improvement Committee – reviews the annual assessment reports from the departments
  • SOC – Students of Concern team – this is the group that responds when someone completes a retention alert
  • SR – Scientific Reasoning – one of the areas of engagement in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • SUSI – Simpson Urban Studies Institute – Simpson students are able to work with human service providers to tackle issues of social justice through projects like neighborhood cleanups, citizenship classes, and an education program at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville, Iowa.
  • SWAC – Simpson Writing Across the Curriculum is an essential unit of the liberal arts education provided through our Engaged Citizenship Curriculum (ECC).
  • TEC – Teacher Education Committee recommends policies concerning the teacher education program
  • TLC – a Tradition of Learning and Caring – this group has been renamed the Students of Concern team – this is the group that responds when someone completes a retention alert
  • WC – Written Communication – one of the embedded skills in the Engaged Citizenship Curriculum
  • WF – Writing Fellows – each Simpson Colloquium section has a writing fellow to help the new students improve their writing skills
