Syllabus Expectations for Music at Simpson

Simpson College provides guidelines for the creation of syllabi.  Please refer to these “Required Syllabus Elements” as you create each course syllabus. If you are teaching a graduate course, additional information can be found at the Post-Baccalaureate Curriculum Committee’s resource.

SYLLABI are required at Simpson College for any activity in which students will receive a grade (P/F or letter grade).  This includes applied music, ensembles, Mus 014: Instrumental Chamber Music, Mus 015: Opera, and more traditional “classroom academic” courses.

If you have not created an applied music syllabus in the past, please contact your area coordinator for a model. The department has a standard departmental formula for engaged student learning hours in applied music. At the very least, please check in with your area coordinator to ensure that your statement is in line with the department and college policy. The Chair’s office will handle syllabi for Mus 001 and all recitals.

THANK YOU for your attention to this important step each and every semester! In addition to keeping us compliant with college regulations, the syllabus provides an incredibly important tool for students to understand what is expected of them for success in each of our interactions. It provides an opportunity for students to enter into discussions with you about how your work during the semester will proceed. So, in addition to creating the syllabus, please be sure to take the time to distribute it (electronically or in print) and discuss it with each student involved in your grade-bearing activities.
