Service Learning and You

You probably know that Simpson College was founded by members of the United Methodist Church, so it should come as no surprise that issues of social justice, moral responsibility, global perspectives, and personal integrity are also some of the foundations of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.

Each semester, courses in the department provide the opportunity for students to directly utilize classroom knowledge in applied educational or human services settings in the Des Moines metropolitan area. Some past examples include mentoring immigrant children, serving meals to the hungry, and mentoring middle school students to not engage in bullying through a mock trial scenario.

Department Chair Carolyn Dallinger has developed the courses on service-learning, ranging from semester-long courses, to weeks of service on Spring Break, to travel abroad courses in May Term, to unique experiences during the semester.

Remember to look for these courses when you are registering if you have a strong interest in social justice issues:

HSV 101 – Introduction to Human Services (a few sections)
CJ 300 – Juvenile & Family Law
HSV 343 – Social Welfare Policy
