Community Tool Box on Collaborative Leadership

“The Community Tool Box is a free, online resource for those working to build healthier communities and bring about social change. It offers thousands of pages of tips and tools for taking action in communities.”

This link in particular is to the last section–collaborative leadership–in a chapter on leadership generally. It covers the following information:

“WHAT IS COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP?

WHY PRACTICE COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP?

WHEN IS COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP APPROPRIATE?

WHO ARE REAL AND POTENTIAL COLLABORATIVE LEADERS?

HOW DO YOU PRACTICE COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP?”

It also offers the information as a checklist and a PowerPoint. It begins with an accessible case study about teen pregnancy and different ways communities responded to it, with a collaborative approach being more effective. It is not aimed at colleges, but much of it can be useful for a professor prior to the class, so she can better reflect on her own understanding of collaborative leadership. It also discusses the benefits of collaborative leadership, as well as some disadvantages and also barriers that might inhibit collaboration. It’s a useful place for a professor to consider as he designs his class, or perhaps to consult if problems arise.

Strengths

Concerns

It doesn’t offer much by way of exercises, assignments, assessment, etc.

Recommendation for use

This resource would be great for a class that has an experiential learning component.
