Video modules from the University of Minnesota cover the entire research process – choosing a topic, brainstorming keywords, creating an effective search strategy, searching databases and locating and evaluating resources.

Strengths

These modules cover all steps in the research process including topic selection and keyword identification

Concerns

In the searching portion of the product, the discovery tool searched is specific to the University of Minnesota but similar to Dunn’s Encore Duet product. Some of the other resources mentioned are available at Dunn but not all of them.

Students are also asked to complete a research worksheet which is password protected. A alternate worksheet would have to be developed.

Recommendations for Use

Several modules would be excellent for an SC or other lower level class. For instance, “choosing a research topic” will help students narrow their focus. Students could be asked to review the content and complete the research worksheet. Students could search Encore Duet and Academic Search Complete @ Dunn when they get to the library database portion.
