Strengths

By filming a variety of speakers, including both professional speakers and speaking consultants, this video introduces students to diverse perspectives on public speaking. Because this is a Films on Demand resource, both students and faculty should be able to access it, both on campus and off.

Concerns

This video is quite long. Instructors will need to watch it ahead of time to determine what will be most useful for the presentations students will be doing in their classes.

Recommendations for use

This video would be great as a resource that students could watch on their own, especially if students were directed to specific sub-sections of the overall video. For classes with a strong emphasis on OC, instructors could show sections in small chunks that coincide with the speech preparation step that you will be covering that week (i.e. covering Purpose, Subject choice, and Preparation right after assigning the presentation; then assigning Delivery Style, Keeping Interest, and Overcoming Nerves right before students are meant to start giving presentations).

The sections of this video that would be most relevant to OC courses in any discipline area are: Choosing Your Subject, Rehearsal, Overcoming Nerves, Keeping Interest, and Delivery Style.
