Open online course on general intercultural communication. In Section 8-1, “Using Gestures,” professor Robert Godwin-Jones focuses specifically on the study of the gestures that we make during oral communication, and how they may be interpreted by different cultures and in different contexts.
Strengths
This resource provides ideas for instructors teaching any type of course involving oral communication across cultures – not only language and culture courses on campus, but also study abroad courses.
Concerns
The material does not focus on formal presentations but rather more general, everyday oral communication.
Recommendations for use
There are several types of materials included: videos with exercises, readings and response prompts, presentations, quiz-type exercises, and a list of key terms. The materials cover a wide variety of cultures, including many non-Western cultures, which is appreciated.
