Strengths

Anyone who has ever tried to find decent speech examples on Youtube knows how difficult it can be. And examples on TedTalks or other real-world speeches may not have the same structure that an OC course requires. These speeches allow students to see polished, well-structured and researched topics that mimic what a student might do in a class.

Concerns

As these speeches have been practiced many times, students may find the level of polish unrealistic. However, these could be good to compare with TedTalks or to analyze and discuss how these might be different from what they will do for class and what competitors do (preparation techniques) to make their speeches this effective. Also, these topics are from a few years ago. However, this allows students to see a good speech topic, but one that is a bit dated, which will discourage students from copying speech topics or research.

Recommendations for use

These 10-minute speeches could be shown in class help students identify effective delivery techniques, organization, source citation, gesturing, or other areas of OC preparation and presentation. Speech examples that would be most relevant for students to see would be Persuasion, Informative, Impromptu, or Extemporaneous Speaking.
