Who are Writing Consultants?
Consultants are students, just like their peers, but they are asked to perform a challenging and rewarding task: Meet one-on-one with another human and try to help that human communicate their ideas. Good consultants, above all else, do three things well:
- They listen to and dignify the needs of students.
- They adapt readily and warmly to uncertain situations (for, they never know what type of writing or writer they might be working with).
- They care about strong communication skills as a matter of intrinsic value.
While consultants are usually strong writers, these three skills are the skills of strong revisers and collaborators, which not all strong writers possess. Therefore, consultants receive extensive training across two 2-credit English classes (English 270 and English 275) to help them develop excellent interpersonal and rhetorical skills.
Interested in becoming a writing consultant? Applications are rolling. Read the job description and email your materials to Colin Payton, the Writing Center Director.

Angel schewe
"Hello! My name is Angel Schewe (she/her/hers), and I am from Marshalltown, Iowa. I am currently majoring in English with minors in secondary education, journalism, and honors. While at Simpson, I have become involved in numerous clubs and organizations such as the women's cross country and track team, SC Leader, Assistant Manager at Holy Grounds, SC Scholars, Pi Beta Phi, and now writing consultant. I have always enjoyed reading and writing, which inspired me to become a writing consultant. I love helping others grow to reach their full potential, and I strongly believe that I can do that by working at the Simpson College Writing Center. If you need someone to bounce ideas off of, help scripting out the perfect hook to a paper, or just someone to read/look over your work and offer input, be sure to schedule an appointment! I would love to help in any way I possibly can!"

I love seeing what other people have written, whether it be academic or creative, and helping them find that writing's full potential. I joined the writing center staff because I believe that any writing can be great and anyone can become a better writer. I am not here to tell you how to write or because I think I am a better writer than anyone; I am here to discuss and develop more passionate writing. If you need someone to brainstorm with, draft out ideas, revise papers, or sit with you as you type, I am your gal!
