2012 Interns

Kristina Kelehan

The summer of 2012 Kristina Kelehan was the history intern for the Greater Des Moines Partnership. She was able to do some research about what records the organization has been able to keep over the years. Some of the artifacts Kristina discovered include an 1888 aerial photograph of downtown Des Moines (prior to the airplane), the 1927 visit of Charles Lindbergh to Des Moines, and so many other amazing and interesting things.

Rawley Butler

Rawley Butler completed and added consistency to biographies on African-American officers that had been compiled by past interns. This was a very rewarding and educational experience, and at times, frustrating. He learned of the importance that the commissioned African-American officers at Fort Des Moines played in our society through hands on research.

Keely Goshia

In the fall of 2012 Keely Goshia interned at the Iowa Department for the Blind. The project that she worked on at the Department was called “Historyof Blindness in Iowa”. The main goal of the project was to share the history of blindness in Iowa with all Iowans. It is a collection of oral histories that discuss the various topics about being blind.

Ryan Stumbo

Ryan Stumbo interned with the Des Moines Metro Opera Company (DMMO) in Indianola, Iowa. He researched the history of the DMMO’s office building, which was formerly a Carnegie Library. Ryan conducted the majority of his research through the Indianola Public Library Archives. Hopefully, with this work and future research, the building will be able to be nationally recognized and renovated. Ryan learned a tremendous amount about the discipline of history and the avenues of research.

Allie Walker

The summer of 2012 Allie Walker interned at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. The hotel was going to be going through extensive renovations, and as a historic landmark its owner wanted to incorporate the hotels rich history in the planning. Her job was to search through and catalog documents, artifacts, and any other items into an archive. Allie thought it was fun to read articles and letters from famous hotel patrons such as Vice President Spiro Agnew and Kathryn Hepburn.
